History of Provo Golf Club

In 1989, The Turks and Caicos Water Company, being part of the largest private landowners in the Turks and Caicos Islands decided to invest funds into the advancement of the Islands by promoting tourism through the development of the countries first Golf Club.

Feasibility studies showed that owning the Turks and Caicos Water Company was the integral ingredient to achieving this feat in a semi-arid climate.  In fact golf courses need such a huge supply of water that it soon became apparent that the Turks and Caicos Water Company was the only entity that could accomplish this project in such a location as Providenciales.

Karl Litten of Boca Raton, Florida, was chosen as the architect as he had not only completed over 40 golf courses worldwide, but he was also well known for designing golf courses on tough terrain that were suitable for both the average golfer as well as the experienced player, while keeping to a design that could be maintained economically.

Ground broke in May 1991 only two years after the project was first conceived and was open for play only 18 months later, with the first golfers teeing it up on November 7, 1992.

Throughout Provo Golf Club’s first 20 years there has been continued investment and improvements to both the golf course and the club house leading to the great facility that we enjoy today.

Karl Litten: Course Architect
Karl Litten

Karl Litten is a world renowned golf course architect who is continuing to turn out spectacular golf courses worldwide.

Overall, Litten has been involved with more than 110 golf courses.  He began to establish his own reputation in the 1980's and today he operates out of Asheville, North Carolina.  After studying Architecture at Ohio University, Karl moved to Florida in 1957. He worked as a surveyor for a civil engineering firm in Miami for 10 years, becoming involved in land planning, drainage, and irrigation.

Litten tries to resist traits, trends and labels. Like many of his peers, Litten would prefer that when a golfer completes a round he still would not recognize whose course it was.

Among courses designed by Litten, are Boca Grove Plantation in Boca Raton and Gleneagles Country Club, Delray Beach - the site of a Senior Tour event in 1983 - 1986.  He is also well known in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where he has designed three projects and Japan where he completed the $100 million 18 hole Aoki Golf Club at Hyogo with golfing legend lsao Aoki
